How to Create Your Own Peaceful Sacred Space!

Look around your home. Is there one spot anywhere that is strictly yours and no one else’s? You don’t share it with anyone or don’t entertain in? Is there even a corner that you can claim as your own and treat as your “sacred space”?  Have you even heard of the term “sacred space”? I know I didn’t before a couple of years ago.

When I started my spiritual journey about 5 years ago (wow) I knew I wanted to soak up ALL the information I could, and so I began my lovely adventure of going through websites, social media and of course Pinterest. Oh I fell down the rabbit hole and I fell hard.

One of the things I fell in love with, was the concept of an altar. Now before you close this post, give me a second to explain what that is. Yes altars  are used in many different religions, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be a religious experience. I used to call my altar my sacred space, but then I realized that I might be a little wrong with. An altar is just one part of your sacred space. It holds your items for a particular event or holiday or it could be as simple as some crystals and some candles. If you would like to learn more about altars themselves then check out this post.

So what is a sacred space?

A sacred space is where you can go to when your feeling stressed, upset, grateful  or needing an energy boost. Basically use it for whatever your need is. This space is yours and yours alone. Don’t let anyone dictate to you what your space should be like. Everyone goes through life differently, so why should your space be any different. Embrace your individuality.

Why is having a sacred space important?

Every room in your house has a function- kitchen for cooking and eating, bedroom for sleeping, bathroom for well you know. A sacred space’s function is to allow  you to spend time with you. You need it in order to step back, regroup and recharge.  It is your space  to help drown out the rest of the world and to get back to what’s important- your happiness.

But where do you start? Well this is the point where you have to sit and think about these 3 questions:

1-      What do you want your sacred space to say?

2-      What is going to make you feel comfortable?

3-      What do you want to achieve in your sacred space?

What to Use Your Sacred Space For?

The great thing about this room is the fact that you can use it for anything! Need to meditate? Go right ahead! Need to journal or read up on a topic? Then grab a warm beverage and get comfy! Need to hide from the world and it’s negativity? Then close that door and do your thing!

What goes into your space?

Once you get clear on what this space will mean to you,  you should feel excited because it means you are one step closer to achieving tranquility and peace. Now you need to decide what you want it to look like. Here are some ideas on what to include or how to make it look the way you want it to. By no means do you need to do any or all of these ideas, but if you are struggling to get started these might put you on the right path or at the very least inspire you!

This is important. You want to set the tone right away, but it won’t be easy. Choosing a colour takes time so don’t make the choice quickly. Colours can create different moods and help to achieve certain goals. Don’t just think about the colours of the walls though. Think about cushions, tapestry, figures, crystals, a rug etc. Let your personality shine.

Not a necessity to say the least, but candles can also help set the mood. Plus candles also have a way of helping to push you forward with your goals. They help to connect you with the universe. Looking to connect with candles? Check out this awesome post here.

Don’t just have candles on your altar! Nope keep them around the room. It will completely help with the ambiance. Just remember fire safety and put them out at the end!

I love crystals. Each one works with you in different ways. There is just so many out there. When looking for what crystals to include in your space, do your research, but also go with your gut. Some crystals will draw you in and surprise you. Some basic crystals to keep on hand- Amethyst (protection), Rose Quartz (love), Clear Quartz (cleansing and charging your crystals),  Citrine (abundance),  Carnelian (creativity). Not only can you keep these on your altar, but again you can have them around your room. Keep Tourmaline around the room to help as a barrier against negativity.

Meditations are important and this is a great spot for you to have them. Want to make the most out of it? Then include some music in your space. Sounds are also good. Just try to have something that will relax you.

Guided meditations are also a great choice, but don’t get frustrated if they don’t work for you. Sometimes having someone talk can really bring you out of your groove. I know it does with me. Also when it comes to music, it doesn’t necessarily have to be “meditation music”. Sometimes it can be as simple as classical music. I personally love to throw on The Nutcracker soundtrack. It helps me instantly when I need to meditate. Find out what works for you!

If you are going on a personal spiritual journey, then you are going to want to  keep books on hand. There is a lot of information out there waiting for to be digested. Take this time and really get to know things that interest you. Look for any sort of topic, but here are some ideas for you:

  • Law of Attraction

  • Manifestation

  • Astrology

  • Chakras

  • Spells

  • Meditation

  • Tarot

Throw a bit more oxygen into your room and make the place a little brighter by putting some plants in there. A great deal of energy does come from plants. Just make sure to take care of them! Just like how you need to nurture yourself, you will need to nurture yourself as well.

The great thing about your sacred space is that you can have whatever you want in it. It’s your space.

I would love to hear what you want to have in your space? What would be a neccessity? Let me know in the comment section below!
