5 Things to Put on Your Samhain Altar
Some people love Christmas, some people love Halloween and some people lost their freakin minds when The Nightmare Before Christmas came out.
Unpopular opinion? I can’t say I am a huge Nightmare Before Christmas fan. If you choose to stop reading this post because of that I completely understand.
But let me earn back some points and say this. I love Halloween and the fact that I can spend a little extra time with my grandmother during Samhain, makes me love that holiday too.
So let me make sure that we are on the same page. If you would like to know more about the holiday Samhain then check out my post here. If you already know about the holiday then fabulous! Then check out this post here to find out to create an Ancestor altar.
Today’s post is another altar post. I am kind of obsessed with them, but they can get a little pricey sometimes. So here are 5 things that you can put on your Samhain altar, that you can buy at your local dollar store, outside and even just some cheap pieces at your local crystal shop!
Starting all the way in August you can’t walk into a dollar store without seeing at least 2-3 aisles full of halloween decorations. So you might as well take advantage of the supply!
So look for halloween decorations such as :
ears of corn
Things in dollar stores have changed significantly in the last 5-10 years. You can get some great looking products for next to nothing. The quality is better, the look is better and you should not feel like any item is less than authentic because it wasn’t bought at a crystal shop. It’s never about the item, it’s about the intention behind it.
Whether it’s a candle with Jesus on it, a candle with a positive message, regular candles or even birthday candles, a candle is a great way to bring a romantic/haunted vibe to your altar. It doesn’t matter what kind of candles you buy. If birthday candles are where it’s at, then that’s what you go with!
Some colours that are perfect for Samhain and halloween:
Black- Getting rid of negative energy
Indigo- Psychic abilities
White- Good for any spell

Want to put some things on your altar that connects you to nature? Guess what? That will legit cost you nothing! Now let’s be a little sensitive to Mother Earth though and make sure that we do not take anything that is living.
So what should you get? Here are some ideas!
acorns or other seeds
Ancestor’s Pictures and Mementos
Samhain is all about the veil thinning. It’s all about being able to talk to the departed. Is there something you have been wanting to say to a recently departed family member? It’s okay if you do! It’s not weird or anything. An ancestor altar is completely normal, but maybe you just want one or two things on your altar.
So choose a picture that means something to you
Their favourite vice (alcohol or cigarettes)
Their favourite hobby
Their favourite sports team
Whatever is going to connect you to them is what you’re going to want to put on your altar! You can do no wrong with this one!
You can’t forget your crystals! Now if you are a crystal collector like I am, then there is no need to go out and buy more. Just go rooting around in your collection. But if you are new to this, then I suggest sticking to buying some tumbled or small raw form crystals. It will help with your budget!
Carnelian- This is one of my favourite stones for many reasons, but it’s a great stone that is often overlooked at this time. This crystal is great because it said to to protect the dead on their journey to the after life. How cool is that?
Smoky Quartz- Helps to ground you, and helps to get rid of nightmares. So if any negative spirits try to come into connect, a piece of Smoky Quartz will do the trick.
Labradorite- If you are looking to strengthen your intuitive and divination skills, then Samhain is the time to get started on that. Keep a piece of Labradorite on your altar especially if you plan on working with your tarot cards, runes, pendulums etc.
If crystals are your thing, then you should check out the Crystal Connection Club!
Each and every altar is personal. Yours will look different than mine, and it will certainly look different then those on Instagram and Pinterest. Don’t let that deter you from showing it off. In fact, if you post it on social media, then leave a link in the comment section below. I would love to check it out!
