Creativity- The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
Creativity is a beautiful thing, but just like humans it can have many sides to it. When it is nurtured properly, and attended to regularly it can be a glorious thing. It flourishes and grows. Sometimes though when emotions get involved, negativity, and doubt can grow like a bad weed, and your creativity doesn't grow like it should. Then sometimes unfortunately, things can get out of control and comparison and judgement can rear it's ugly head.
Today let's focus on the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to creativity!
When things are good, things are very good. Creativity is like that. When you are on a roll with a creative project, it may seem like the sky is the limit. It is almost exhilarating and you get a fantastic high just thinking about all the awesome things you are going to create. I get excited just thinking about it. Ahh.
Creativity is important in your day to day activities because it utilizes your brain. Instead of being on the couch like a lump, you are throwing all your energy and enthusiasm into the project at hand. That helps to keep your mind focused and sharp!
The great thing about creativity, is that it allows you so much room for experimentation. You don't want to be limited and are willing to look at things from a different angle. This is why you should not always think about reinventing the wheel. Instead look at a solution and think about the different ways to make it better. This is how there are great discoveries each and every day in the world!
Not every project is going to be 100% each and every time. You are bound to make mistakes now and again. Question is, how are you going to handle it? Are you going to allow yourself to feel like a failure because you can't make it perfect the first time? Or are you going to try again and again in order to make it beautiful? Failure is inevitable when it comes to creativity, business or developments. We can either allow it to wash over us or we can step back, assess and try it again, but differently.
Creative blocks are a real thing. Sometimes we get too much in our head that we burn out and give up. Instead of giving up let's focus on how we can push through it. Want some tips on how to push past it? Check them out here!
Unless you plan on keeping every single creative project close to you and not show a soul, you will run into a negative critic every now and then. It sucks even more when it is your own damn family. Some people just want to rain on everyone's parade. Unfortunately it is easier to believe someone's negative opinion over 5 great opinions. It leads to self doubt, and ultimately your own negativity.
Looking at your project with negativity, can lead to a world of emotions that have no place there. You should be happy with your project. You put your blood, sweat and tears into it. This is your baby. You raised it from nothing and gave it life. Don't let someone's negativity cloud your judgement.
I learned that lesson all too well. While designing my site, I knew the look and feel I wanted to have. Unfortunately not everyone liked it (you really can't please everyone). I was hit with negative comments left right and center. It made me forget about the positive ones I also received. I finally had to stop allowing those comments into my head. Instead I needed to remember that yes others can judge, but ultimately this is mine and I created it the way I wanted it.
Speaking of judgement. As easy as it is for someone else to judge your work, it is just as easy to judge someone else's. Trust me I should know. I am sure you do too. Sometimes it happens without us even realizing or putting much effort into it. We are all different and our projects are going to come out differently too. If asked for critisism we should always give equally positive and negative comments. We never want someone to walk away feeling destroyed.
Another ugly side of creativity? The comparison game. It is a game where no one wins. Especially not you. Once you fall down that hole it is hard to dig yourself back out. So there really is no point in even starting. Just focus on yourself. If anything ask for help, but never copy or compare. You will get no where really quickly.
